Sony PlayStation Vita sells over 1.2 million units worldwide

By Craig Bison

The handheld video gaming unit from Sony called the PlayStation Vita has sold more than 1.2 million systems worldwide according to Sony’s official press release.

The PS Vita had a significant jump in sales from 500,000 units sold in January when it was initially released in Asian countries Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, the new totals now include the Vita gaming systems sold in the United States and in Europe.

These are good numbers but gaming and business insiders question whether the Sony PS Vita will be able to continue steady sales or increased sales in the months to come.

The Vita is an upgrade to the previous handheld model the PSP offered by Sony, the number one system in the handheld video gaming market is still the Nintendo 3DS, even though sales have dropped for the 3DS, Nintendo still continues to dominate the market since the early days of the first portable Game boy gaming system. But the handheld gaming market is being affected by Ipad, Iphone and Android games for multifunctional touch tablets and touch phones which offer many games for 99 cents and lets them add their games to their phones making it even more convenient. Sony and Nintendo systems main target demographic are serious gamers.

Sony said they will try to offer more games for the Vita and said that over seventy new titles for the PlayStation Vita are in development for possible release.
