The California Mega Church home to the Robert Schuller ministry is bankrupt. The Crystal Cathedral designed by architect Phillip Johnson in 1977 and completed in 1980 for $18 million dollars was a vision of Shuller’s who has been preaching since the 1950’s.
The church owes over 100 vendors $7.5 million and are $55 million in total debt.
At the start of 2010, creditors filed lawsuits against the Crystal Cathedral to collect money that was due to them for providing goods, services and broadcasting “The Hour of Power” weekly Television show.
A board member said that the total debt of the church is $55 million US dollars. The church board recently filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 18, 2010, citing $43 million in debt, which included a mortgage of $36 million and $7.5 million debt owed to vendors.
The officials of the church have said they’ve been trying to negotiate payments with vendors and creditors but after suits were filed and the writs of attachment were granted, the Crystal Cathedral church had not choice but to declare bankruptcy.
