Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 29KOs) put on a boxing clinic Saturday night when he fought Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32KOs) in front of jam packed crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
From the beginning of round one to round eleven, Martinez dominated Chavez Jr. with his boxing and ring generalship, Martinez controlled every aspect of the fight. Chavez Jr. seemed like a zombie just plodding forward without throwing many punches, and the punches he did throw missed or were blocked by Martinez.
The only round Chavez Jr. won was the twelfth and final round, in this round he actually threw his hands and was able to catch Martinez right on the chin and wobble him and followed up with a few more punches sending Martinez stumbling to the ground. Martinez got right back up and was getting attacked by Chavez Jr. only to throw back, and survive the twelfth round.
The predominately pro Chavez Jr. audience rose to their feet in the twelfth round hoping that their fighter would pull of a miraculous last ditch knock out of Martinez, reminiscent of his father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. twelfth round KO of Meldrick Taylor.
After the fight the cores were read, 118-109, 118-109, and 117-110, all in favor of the new WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.
